古今名人總結的讀書方法很多。我最欣賞的是歐陽修的“讀書三上法”和董遇的“讀書三余法”。所謂“三上”就是指馬上，枕上，廁上；所謂“三余”，是指“冬者，歲之余也；夜者，日之余也；雨者，月之余也”。這兩種方法勸告人們讀書要善于利用零星時間，做到時時可讀書，處處能讀書，使讀書完全生活化。想想看，假如我們能用“三上法”和“三余法”來學外語，還能學不好嗎？ “三上法”中的馬上（on the horse），是指在行進中也不忘讀書。我們也可以做到無論走著站著都想英語、學英語、用英語。如：看到一則公益廣告“吸煙有害健康”，你就可以在心里把它譯成“Smoking will do you harm．”；走在路上看到兩個人正在交談，你就可以用英語問自己：“What are they talking about ？”；在街上碰到兩個小孩在踢足球，你就會想：“Two boys are playing football in the street．”枕上（in the sleep），就是你在睡覺時，也可以用英語想：“What have I done today ？”，“How many new words have I learned？”廁上（in the rest room），也就是上廁所也不忘學英語。這時，你可以想，英語中，“廁所”一詞有幾種表達法？于是你就想到以下幾種表達法：①toilet；②rest room；③WC：men\"s room，women\"s room；④lavatory；⑤wash- room等等。所謂“三余”概括起來就是如何利用一切零星時間來讀書。我們學外語如果能把一切可以利用的零星時間都利用起來，同樣可以學到很多東西。具體做法就是，把要記的短語和句子抄在小紙條上，隨身攜帶，利用茶余飯后、等人、等車、散步等零星時間來記，反復默念或朗讀。紙條的內容可以多種多樣。
